Just like anything else, you should shop around when buying double-glazed windows for your home. If you accept the first quotation you receive, then you could live to regret it. That being said, because one double-glazing supplier is cheaper than another doesn't necessarily mean you are getting the best deal. After all, one double-glazed window may be very different from one made by a rival supplier. What should you be looking out for when choosing double-glazed windows for your home?
- Glass Thickness and Energy Efficiency
In Australia, there are certain energy performance standards that all double-glazed windows are expected to meet. Typically, this will come down to the type of framing material that has been used and the thickness of the glass. Most windows are made with glazing that is between three and five millimetres thick per pane nowadays. Your supplier should be able to offer these construction details immediately so steer clear of firms that are sketchy or evasive in this area. Check their products comply with AS 2047 before buying.
- Consider Your Glazed Doors
If you are having new windows fitted to your home or commercial premises, then it is also often a good time to have new doors fitted, too. This way, it can be cheaper than going for two separate installations. Furthermore, you can get it all done at one time, thereby minimising disruption. However, not all suppliers manufacture double-glazed doors as well as windows so check this before placing an order.
- Frame Selection and Advice
Many suppliers of double glazing provide different framework options. If you want the least costly finish, then uPVC is a good option. However, higher-end finishes in wood or aluminium are also possible. If you think you'd like a traditional or more modern architectural look, then find out whether your supplier can offer either of these choices, too. Of course, both wood and aluminium cost a bit more than uPVC but given that well-made double-glazed windows should last for decades, the extra outlay may be worth it.
- Are Installation Services Provided?
Finally, not all double-glazing manufacturers supply and fit windows. If you want a complete service, then choose a firm that does both or that has a partner company it works with. On the other hand, you might prefer to fit your windows as part of a DIY project. If so, check that installing them yourself won't invalidate the warranty your windows should be supplied with.
